    Home Improvement DIY work...

    Jan 12th, 2016

With home improvement centers and hardware stores springing up in almost every neighborhood or community in the country we have a large amount of education, tools and building supplies available anyone. Big box stores like Home Depot and Lowes has training available and you can locate numerous books and magazines devoted to the subject of home improvement. This trend has even been more popularized by TV shows and reality TV such as “This Old House” on PBS and many others.

This is can be a great strategy for some people. But make sure you’re doing the job properly and not flushing your hard earned money down the remodeled bathroom sink. I would estimate that saving money is the primary motivation behind the majority of DIY projects. Not to say that a lot of people don’t enjoy working with their hands and learning new skill sets. As a professional handyman, I understand first hand the feeling and pride that comes from seeing the fruits of own labor. There is nothing more satisfying than completing a home improvement project successfully. So don’t take any of this wrong, I am the last one to discourage anyone from taking on a simple home improvement project.

However, as a handyman in Prescott AZ, I see the other side of DIY jobs and can tell you first hand there are some negative possible outcomes. According to the National Association of the Remodeling Industry (NARI), many professional remodelers won’t even take on a DIY job gone bad. They find it too difficult to fix the problem and too many liabilities involved in taking on the work.

Here are some guidelines for deciding which jobs to tackle on your own:

    • Painting is usually a good DIY job.

    • Cleaning out gutters and checking the roof…

    • Landscaping (because who wants to do that?)

If the job involves electricity or gas/oil connections, call a professional. One mistake here could be fatal. Most jurisdictions require that certain types of work be performed only by a licensed professional in order to meet building codes and safety requirements.

If you enjoy DIY projects and are good at completing them and have a lot of spare time to use by all means save yourself some money. But don’t lose sight of the fact that saving a few dollars now often increases the cost of a project in both time and money in the long run.
